Materials Centre of Excellence
About Us
Centres of Excellence for Technology and Industrial Collaboration (CETIC) is
a programme set up to help local,
national and international companies benefit from relevant
knowledge, expertise and facilities in Welsh Universities.
One of the seventeen accredited centres is the Materials CETIC at Swansea,
which is based on the expertise and facilities in the University's School of
Engineering.
How The Centre Works
We
are able to provide access to around 30 academic staff and post-doctoral
research engineers, together with state-of-the-art laboratories. Projects can be
arranged in a variety of formats, with durations from a few
days to long term research programmes lasting a number of years. Enquiries from
prospective industrial clients are always welcome, dedicated staff are available
to answer your calls.
Multi-Sector TechnologyWales has a proud history of production and use of engineering materials.
Safeguarding this economic base, and exploiting new technology opportunities,
requires in-depth knowledge of materials science and technology. The Materials
CETIC at Swansea has experience of industrial collaboration in the following
sectors:
 |
Aerospace |
 |
Automotive |
 |
Energy generation |
 |
Steel production |
 |
Electronics |
 |
Recycling |
 |
Chemical processing |
 |
Forensic science |
Our expertise allows the macroscopic behaviour of engineering structures and
components to be related to the behaviour of atoms and crystal defects on the
sub-nanometre scale. As well as advice on materials selection we can also
provide solutions for the life-cycle management of engineering plant, components
and products.
Investing In People
In addition to the direct commercial services provided by the Materials CETIC,
accredited degrees in Materials are offered by the School of Engineering at
Swansea.
Undergraduate
- BEng & MEng Materials Science & Engineering
- BEng Resistant Materials & Design Technology
Postgraduate
- MRes Power and Aerospace Materials
- MRes Steel Process and Product Development
- MRes Recycling Technology
- EngD Steel Technology
- EngD Aerospace Materials
- PhD & MPhil in selected research areas
Many can be taken on a part time basis by staff already employed in industry.
Furthermore the Materials CETIC can arrange for individual modules from some of
these degrees to be provided on a stand alone basis to commercial organisations.
